Halong Bay

Floating village in Halong Bay

Explorations adviser Melissa Gallant shares her multi- part adventure of a recent Southeast Asia trip.

Halong Bay , a Unesco Heritage site, is world reknowned for its scenic beauty.  I was fortunate to spend 3 days in this beautiful place which is dotted with limestone outcroppings many of which are covered with lush greenery. It’s about a 4 hour bus ride to the Halong Bay dock, but well worth it, with rice fields and country villages all along the way.

The Au Co boat was a delight.   Our cabin was big enough, the bathroom modern, but the best was the private balcony where one can quietly take in the beauty.    There are plenty of public spaces for socializing or for quiet privacy too.

The boat served 5 elements meals with courses representing fire, wind, water, earth and metal.   The food was yummy!

Highlights for me  were many:   Tai Chi at sunrise on the top deck,   dinner in a cave with over 1000 candles providing light, visiting a floating village (home of fishermen and their families,),   kayaking in coves and caves, and jumping into the bay off of the third deck of the boat .  (I was challenged by Alexis, the youngest member of our group.)  Photo of this jump will not be posted.
